Hotel

By Dr. Crit Minster

For the jet-setting traveler who has no interest in staying at the bottom of the hill in dusty, rabble-filled Aguas Calientes, there is the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. The Sanctuary is the only hotel right up on the top of the hill next to the ruins: the entrance is a short walk away (as in about fifty feet). The hotel has two suites and 29 rooms, some of which have an incredible mountain view (be prepared to pay more if you want the scenic room).  Run by the internationally renowned Orient Express hotel group, you’ll get five-star comfort and service. The hotel offers all of the expected amenities for a hotel in its class: internet, room service, etc. For those who really want to keep their exposure to riff-raff to a minimum, the hotel can help you book a helicopter flight from Cusco. If you cough up several hundred dollars to spend the night, be sure to be first in line to visit the ruins in the morning before the train arrives, bringing hordes of tourists with it. There is an excellent restaurant on the premises as well. Check their web site for special rates and promotions.
