Ollantaytambo Fortress - Ruin Ollantaytambo - Peru

Ollantaytambo's complex was built shortly after Emperor Pachacuteq's conquest of the region. Today, most of it is spread on the face of a mountain, divided over 16 terraces. The terraces and accompanying temples were built using some of the finest stonework in the Inca empire. The most impressive structures are the incompleted Temple of the Moon at the top and also the wonderful examples of Inca irrigation and waterworks. If you can climb all the way to the top of the complex you will be rewarded with excellent views of the town and surrounding ruins.

The fortress is one of the most-visited sites in the Sacred Valley, so during peak hours of high season, it can be swamped with tour groups. If you can, it is best to visit the ruins first thing in the morning, which means staying somewhere nearby the night before.
