Culture

By Amanda Massello

On the island of Taquille in Lake Titicaca, it is a man´s hat, not the ring on his finger, which reveals his marital status.  The men of this traditional quechua-speaking island while away the hours of the day weaving these hats. For bachelors, a mixed red and white hat is characteristic—this is shed upon marriage, when it is replaced with a solid red woven hat.
