V!VA User‘s Description

Floating in the southernmost waters of Lake Titicaca, Islas Anapia and Yuspique have become part of a package tour organized by the socially conscious tour company All Ways Travel. Implementing a new economic stratagy of higher prices and better quality, this father-daughter team based in Puno has created a form of sustainable tourism that benefits local communities. Recently, the company was honored by the Ford Foundation as the “Best Community-Based Project in Peru."

The prepaid tour to these islands includes a two-hour scenic drive along the southern coast of Lake Titicaca, with stops at the charming towns of Juli, Pomata, Yunguyo, and finally the port of Punta Hermosa. From here, travelers board a sailboat and make the two hour journey to Isla Anapia. Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed by the father of their host family, and then brought to their island home. Typically, the afternoon involves a hike on nearby Isla Yuspique, accompanied by your host family. This afternoon adventure usually culminates with a beach picnic, and the chance to try some of the local food. Other activities include evening meetings with neighbors, herding animals, fishing, or lending a hand at building a house. Since its inception in 1997, All Ways Tours and its participants have built a library and a puppet theater and painted the local school.

This unique opportunity lends itself to cultural immersion and community development, and typically costs $65 per person for one night or $75 per person for two nights. If you're planning on crossing the border either to or from Bolivia, this trip is an excellent option. You can also combine this trip with a visit to Tiwanaku or Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna.
