If you happen to find yourself spending a day in Juliaca, you won’t be left without anything to do. The city has two interesting churches: Santa Catalina and the more modern Iglesia de la Merced (daily 8-11 a.m., 3:30-5 p.m. Jr Noriega 193, Plaza Bolognesi. Tel: 321-824). Several miradores offer not only spectacular views, but also things of cultural interest. The Museo Municipal has displays on the area’s archaeology and fauna (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Pje de la Cultura, Biblioteca Municipal, Casa de la Cultura, piso 2). Just outside of Juliaca are Laguna de Chacas (Km 6, highway to Lampa) and ancient burial monuments (chullpas) at Esquen (6 km / 3.6 mi northwest of Juliaca) and Chullunquiani (Universidad Unión).
