Around Puno

Day trips from Puno abound. The most popular are the offshore islands: Taquile, Amantaní and Islas Flotantes de los Uros. Birdwatchers should put the Reserva Nacional del Lago Titicaca on their bucket list. Archaeology buffs should schedule time for Sillustani’s famous funerary towers, as well as for lesser-known ruins like Cutimbo (daily 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Km 17 Puno-Moquegua highway. Entry: adults $2.25, students $1.25). Chucuito and other villages are other easy jaunts. After all the high-altitude activities and chill, take a dip in the Loripongo hot springs (54 km / 34 mi from Puno, on the highway to Moquegua).
