Reserva Nacional Del Titicaca - Other Activity Puno - Peru

Reserva Nacional del Lago Titicaca has two sections totaling 36,163 hectares (89,361 ac): Sector Puno, near the city (29,150 ha / 72,031 ac) and Sector Ramis on the far side of the lake near Huancané (7,013 ha / 17,330 ac). The reserve also include Taquile and Amantaní islands, and part of the Islas Flotantes de los Uros.


The park protects vital wetlands carpeted with cattails and totora reed, which were declared a Ramsar site in 1997. These are a birdwatcher’s paradise, with 105 species, including the endemic Titicaca Grebe, Andean Coot and Common Gallinule, as well as flamingos and several species of ducks. Among the nine types of amphibians is the giant Titicaca water frog.


Reserva Nacional del Lago Titicaca has three control posts, at Carata Mocco, Yapura and on Isla Foroba, which also has a Centro de Interpretación. At Carata Mocco is a campground with outhouses.

Getting There

Visits must be arranged in the Sernanp national park office in Puno beforehand. Sector Puno is easily reached from the city; it lies along the highway between Puno and Juliaca. Sector Ramis is 6 kilometers (3.6 mi) by boat from Puno’s port and also may be reached by land.

The park takes qualified volunteers. Contact the national park office in Puno for more information. The reserve has a cold climate; be properly equipped if camping or hiking.
