Arco Deustua Memorial - Historical Building Puno - Peru

Three blocks north of Parque Pino is the Arco Deustua memorial. The huge stone archway was erected in 1847 to commemorate Peru’s soldiers that fell in the battles of Junín and Ayacucho during the Wars of Independence against Spain. Sitting on the crest of a low hill in Parque San Juan, Arco Deustua serves as a good lookout point over Puno. Curiously, the arch was built on the former site of the Santa Bárbara cemetery.
