Catedral de Puno - Historical Building Puno - Peru

The Puno Cathedral, completed in 1757, has a Baroque design evincing European and indigenous influences. The elaborate fa莽ade was carved by Sim贸n de Asto. The spartan interior is accented by a large marble altar backed by a silver altar screen. A fire in 1930 destroyed much of the cathedral鈥檚 artwork, though some works of the Cusque帽a and Italian schools survived. A skirmish between factions of miners in the 18th century resulted in a bullet being lodged in one of the paintings, thereafter called the Lord of the Bullet. Local farmers petition this work when they need rain. The native panti plants growing in front of the church were originally smuggled into town and reportedly are capable of relieving physical pain.
