Getting To and Away from Puno

By Bus

Puno has three main bus terminals. For buses to national and international destinations, go to the Terminal Terrestre, located almost two kilometers (1.2 mi) from the Plaza de Armas (Jr Primero de Mayo 703. Tel. 364-733). The terminal has tourism information desks, shops, tour operators, health clinic, pharmacy, internet / phone centers, restaurants, bathrooms and luggage keep. The taza de embarque (terminal tax) is $0.40. Some shops exchange US dollars and bolivianos. If traveling south to Moquegua or Tacna, take no fruits or vegetables.


To Cusco: most buses leave 7:30-8:30 a.m. or 8:30-10 p.m., 7 hours—Huayuro (2 buses, $12), San Martín (3 buses, $7.50-9), TransZela (2 buses, $13-15). Also Civa, Sur Oriente, Julsa and others.

To Arequipa: most services depart 12:30-9:30 p.m., 6-7 hours—Civa (1 bus, $6), Cruz del Sur (1 bus, $21-27), Flores (7 buses 4:30 a.m.-8:15 p.m., $13), Ormeño (1 bus, $11), San Martín (1 bus, $8.10). Also Julsa (frequent), Señor de los Milagros.

To Lima: buses leave 12:30-7 p.m., 23 hours—Civa (1 bus, $34-48), Cruz del Sur (1 bus, $51-68; can make connections for Nasca, Ica), Flores (3 buses, $45-56), Ormeño (2 buses, $41)

To Moquegua / Tacna: services depart 6:30-9:30 a.m., 5:30-10 p.m., 6 hours / 8 hours, $10-12 / $12-15—Flores (1 bus), Sagitario (1 bus), San Martín (8 buses), Sur Oriente (2 buses), Terra Lines (1 bus)


To Copacabana / La Paz, Bolivia: buses depart 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m., 3 hours / 7 hours, $6-8 / $10-12—Huayruro (1 bus), Titicaca Bolivia (2 buses), Tour Peru (2 buses), Ormeño (1 bus, $20). Buses stop at immigration; most include the ferry fare across the Strait of Tiquina. Many companies also have offices on the 300-block of Jirón Tacna.



Minivans to Moquegua (4 hr, $11.50), Tacna and Arequipa leave when full from JirĂłn Echienique, one block from the Terminal Terrestre. These are a bit more expensive, but much faster and leave throughout the day.



The Terminal Zonal provides bus service to regional destinations like Juliaca and Desaguadero, but is a further four blocks south from the Terminal Terrestre (Av Costanera 451). Closer to town are the Terminal Fátima (Ricardo Palma, 1 block east of Av El Sol), which has minibuses to Juliaca (40 min, $1.30). The in-town stop for vans to Chucuito is on Banchero, 1 block east of Avenida El Sol (leave when fill, 20 min, $0.60).


Several companies offer a Puno-Cusco tour, stopping at Pukará, La Raya, Raqchi and Andahuaylillas. Guides and other services are included; lunch may be extra ($30-40, 7 hr):

By Train

Perú Rail’s luxury Inca Express service to Cusco includes lunch (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 8 a.m.; 10 hr; adults $150, children half price). Fares are high in the high seasons. Reservations should be made up to a week in advance, though some same-day tickets may be available (Monday-Friday 7 a.m.-noon, 3-6 p.m.; Saturday 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Av La Torre 224. By Boat

Puno’s Puerto Lacustre is located at the east end of Avenida El Sol, about one kilometer (0.6 mi) from the Plaza de Armas. Most public and tour agency boats for the islands depart from here. Public launch schedules are:

To Islas de los Uros: Cooperativa AEUTTAL Los Uros (Cel: 950-041-422)—leave when full (10-15 passenger boats) 6 a.m.-4:30 p.m., return 6 a.m.-6:30 p.m. (more frequently 6-11 a.m.); $3.75 round trip. Can leave in one boat and return on another.

By Air

The nearest airport to Puno is Aeropuerto Internacional Inca Manco Cápac, in Juliaca, 44 kilometers (27 mi) away. A taxi from Puno to the airport costs $23-35.
