Referred to by some as the folklore capital of the world, Puno boasts some of the most fascinating and vibrant folklore festivals. Three major festivals are unique to the city:

February 2—Fiesta Patronal Virgen de la Candelaria—This festival honors Puno’s patron saint, and features colorful processions, traditional dances and masses, dances.

May 3-10—Fiesta de Alacitas y las Cruces—At this artisan fair, miniatures of houses, cars, money and other things people desire are sold, to be used in Ekeko offerings.

November 1-7—Anniversary of the Founding of Puno—Civic parades and dancing though the streets are just the beginning of these festivities. November 5, the Inca myth of Manco Cápac and Mama Ocllo departing the waters of Lago Titicaca, to found the Inca Empire, is re-enacted.
