Isla Suasi is a private island located just off the east shore of Lago Titicaca, 75 nautical kilometers (46 mi) from Puno. This is a retreat from the tourism bustle, into a natural paradise. All 43 hectares (106 ac) of the island are an environmental preserve, which includes a trout farm, a greenhouse that raises endangered native flowers, herbs and trees, and a cultural center.
The only accommodation on Isla Sausi is the luxury eco-lodge Casa Andina (www.casa-andina.com). Set amidst gorgeous gardens, the stone, thatched-roof hotel has comfortable rooms and cottages with lake views. Casa Andina rates are all-inclusive, including lodging and meals. It also offers guided hikes, stargazing, canoeing, birdwatching, sauna, massages and other activities.
Stays at the hotel may be arranged through the Puno travel agencies All Ways Travel and Edgar Adventures. Their two- and three-day packages include boat transportation (2 hr by speedboat). Prices for a two-day / one-night package begin at $300 per person. Alternately, travelers may choose to arrive by land and rowboat, by way of a partially paved road along the north shore, to Cambria (152 km / 97 from Puno, 103 km / 63 mi from Juliaca, 4-5 hr).
