The Museo Galería Arte Popular de Ayacucho in Barranco, Lima, flaunts an excellent permanent collection of art from the Ayacucho region, known for its painted religious panels. The anonymous murals found in the churches and basilicas of Ayacucho since the colonial period, afford great insight into the social customs of bygone areas. Pieces range from pre-hispanic to contemporary. Check out artifacts from the conquista such as El Cajón de San Marcos and several examples of Cruces de Camino. For a lesson in recent history, check out the Retablo Cayara, a representation of the 1998 standoff between the military and the Sendero Luminoso in which around 30 people were assassinated and another 45 “disappeared”.
