Approximately 14 km from downtown Lima, Callao still possesses some of the best examples of colonial mansions and plazas (Plaza Gálvez and Plaza Grau chief among them) in Lima.
Visitors here can also check out the Real Felipe fortress, which dates back to 1747, when it was built to defend Lima's primary the port from pirates.
