Casa Riva-Agüero

Location:
Camaná 459
Central Lima, Lima, Peru

Museum

By Ricardo Segreda

Twenty-seven-rooms big, the Casa Riva-Agüero is yet another echo of a distant past in which the rich and powerful built large homes as tributes to their own hubris. The last owner, Don José de la Riva-Agüero, at least had the good sense to donate the building to Peru’s Pontifical Catholic University. It is now home to both a folk-themed Museum of Popular Art and a historical library, and at any given moment features some interesting scientific or cultural exhibit. Its colonial balconies and courtyard are worth looking at themselves. The house is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 7:30 p.m.; admission costs 2 soles ($0.70).
