Cerro de San Cristóbal

Location:
Central Lima, Lima, Peru

Historical Building

By Ricardo Segreda

A large cross at the summit of a 409-meter (1,342 feet) high hill, this attraction provides visitors a great view of Lima extending out to the sea. The cross itself, erected in 1928, supplanted various predecessors, beginning with a wooden cross planted by Francisco Pizarro in 1535 to honor the "miraculous" victory of his 500 troops against an army of 25,000 Incan resistors to Spanish domination. An interpretive museum offers more detail of San Cristóbal's history. It is now also the site an annual religious pilgrimage. Any number of touring vans in front of the municipal building will take you there for five soles, which comes to about $1.70.

Getting There
There are any number of vans leaving the Plaza del Gobierno in downtown Lima that will take you there.
