Iglesia de La Merced

Historical Building

V!VA User‘s Description

One of the oldest churches in all of South America--it was first founded in 1535 by Fray Miguel de Orenes, who was reputed to be 110 years old at the time--Iglesia de la Merced features a very elaborate, impressive façade. Inside, the neoclassic altar is home to a Virgin of Mercy, which was adopted in 1823 as patroness of the Peruvian Army. Parts have been added or reconstructed after earthquakes, resulting in an interesting hodgepodge of styles.

It is located at Jirón de la Unión 621, not far from the central square. Open daily from 8 a.m. - noon and again from 5 – 8 in the evening.
