Featuring some of the most exquisite architecture in Lima, the Parque de la Cultura downtown is a tribute to Lima's urban planners in the 19th century, when it was conceived and built in 1868 as the Parque de la Exposición, as it is still referred to by many locals. Its mix of fountains, Victorian houses and modern art make this a popular favorite for Lima families and lovers. It is also home to two theatre companies that showcase cutting-edge work for both children and adults. Currently, and perhaps as a way of reducing crime and litter, only one or two of its high-iron gates are open at any time.
