Plaza San Martín

City Plaza

By Christopher Minster

Plaza de San Martín is one of the largest and most impressive city squares in Lima. Built in 1921 and named for José de San Martín, a hero of South American independence, the plaza is paved with stones and decorated with antique-looking lights and benches. There is an impressive stature of San Martín in the center of the park. On one side of the plaza is the seen-better-days Gran Hotel Bolívar. The Teatro Colón and El Club Nacional are also located on the plaza.
