Plaza de San Martín is one of the largest and most impressive city squares in Lima. Built in 1921 and named for José de San Martín, a hero of South American independence, the plaza is paved with stones and decorated with antique-looking lights and benches. There is an impressive stature of San Martín in the center of the park. On one side of the plaza is the seen-better-days Gran Hotel Bolívar. The Teatro Colón and El Club Nacional are also located on the plaza at the end of Jiron Bolognesi, near La Punta in the Callao neighborhood.
