Restaurant

By Ricardo Segreda

The Palacio de Sancochado is not just a restaurant. A uniquely limeña local legend for 25 years, the Palacio de Sancochado relies on word of mouth and little else. Owner Juan Ruggiero's creative coup offers up more than lunch on its menu--it has to, since only lunch is served, from noon to 5 p.m., and only one plate offered, with no coffee or desert, either. He has converted his elegant 70-year-old childhood home into a virtual temple of time past. His home features everything from first–model jukeboxes to tintypes and just about anything uniquely obsolete. The total effect is intoxicating. Juan's local clientele, stone–soup like, has made its own donations. The food? The one-entrée-only special is a proudly Peruvian platter of potatoes, yams, yucca, carrots, cabbage, garbanzos, rice, creole sauce and a half–kilo of beef––all for $6. You can forget about eating anything else the day you dine there.
