Chorrillos, which means a “constant trickle of water,” is a lesser-known neighborhood in Lima. Once a beach resort town, it was the scene of heavy fighting during the war between Peru and Chile in 1880-1881, and much of it was destroyed. Today, Chorrillos is tucked up against the Pacific Ocean and offers stunning panoramic views of the bay of Lima and the island of San Lorenzo off Callao's coast. With an atmosphere that resembles a fish market and décor to match, the mood is very relaxed in Chorrillos. Famous for its beach resorts at La Herradura and restaurants specializing in spicy dishes, this neighborhood is not without its attractions. The astronomical observatory El Planetario is built on the historical Morro Solar. The Malecón, the town’s seaside boardwalk, is a great place to spend a lazy afternoon.
Other neighborhoods in Lima: Lima Airport, Barranco, Miraflores, San Isidro, Pueblo Libre, San Borja, Central Lima and Callao.
