Famously listed, just after “Laguna” in the Beach Boy’s song “Surfin’ Safari,” Cerro Azul is a consistent left point break located about 130 kilometers south of Lima. It sees the best waves with a swell from the southwest that will wrap nicely around the headland, and can take you 150 meters or more all the way to the pier. Another left and right closer to the pier starts breaking at about chest high. The typical surf is chest-high, and can tube up. It occasionally sees waves up to a meter overhead. The outer breaks stay fairly light with surfers on the weekends, but the take-off zone can be jam-packed when the waves are really good. The inner breaks are often crowded with kids and body boarders. The beach is very family-friendly and attracts most of the town on the nicer weekends.
The town of Cerro Azul, 130 km south of Lima, has numerous hostels, all with easy beach access and a big plate of fresh ceviche can be had for 20 soles / $6.60 at the numerous restaurants.
