Tourism

Visitors to Peru鈥檚 capital have several places where they may pick up information. Lima鈥檚 tourism office, Oficina de Informaci贸n Tur铆stica, is one block from the Plaza de Armas (Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m., weekends 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Pje Escribanos 145, Central Lima. Tel: 315-1542, E-mail: infoturistica@munlima.gob.pe, URL: www.visitalima.pe).

The national tourism office, iPeru, provides information not only about Lima, but also other national destinations. The main office is in San Isidro neighborhood (Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Jorge Basadre 610, San Isidro. Tel: 421-1627, E-mail: iperulima@promperu.gob.pe, URL: www.peru.travel / www.promperu.gob.pe). Other offices are at the airport, where there are four kiosks that are open 24 hours, seven days per week (Tel: 574-8000, E-mail: iperu@promperu.gob.pe) and at Larcomar mall in Miraflores (daily 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Malec贸n de la Reserva 610, Miraflores. Tel: 445-9400, E-mail: iperularcomar@promperu.gob.pe). Most personnel speak English.

Miraflores city has its own tourism office, with posts at Parque Kennedy (Tel: 617-7242, extension 7259, E-mail: turismo@miraflores.gob.pe) and the Centro Cultural Ricardo Palma (Av Larco 770). This tourism board offers free, guided walking tours of Miraflores.

Barranco's tourism office is in the Biblioteca Municipal (Monday-Saturday 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Parque Municipal. Tel: 719-2046, E-mail: turismo@munibarranco.gob.pe, URL: www.munibarranco.gob.pe).

Hikers, climbers and others should check out the South American Explorers Club (Monday-Friday 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Ca Piura 135, Miraflores. Tel: 444-2150, E-mail: limaclub@saexplorers.org, URL: www.saexplorers.org). Intej issues International Student Identity Cards (ISIC), and can arrange discount air fares and other prices for students (San Mart铆n 240, Barranco. Tel: 247-3230, URL: www.intej.org). The Touring y Autom贸vil Club del Per煤 provides assistance to motorists and has good maps of the country (Av Trinidad Mor谩n 698, Lince. Tel: 614-9999, URL: www.touringperu.com.pe).

The tourism police鈥檚 main post is in the capital鈥檚 Magdalena del Mar district (Jr. Moore 268, Magdalena del Mar. Tel: 460-1060 / 460-0965), with sub-stations in Central Lima (Pje Bel茅n 106. Tel: 424-2053) and Miraflores (Jr. Col贸n 246. Tel: 243-2190).

The immigration office (Migraciones) is in Central Lima (Prolongaci贸n. Av Espa帽a 734, Bre帽a, Central Lima. Tel: 330-4111, URL: www.digemin.gob.pe). Many countries have embassies and consulates in Lima. For a complete listing, please see Embassies & consulates in Peru in the Introduction.

Money

Banks in Lima are typically open Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Many exchange US dollars and Euros, though casa de cambio have better rates. All have 24-hour ATMs throughout the capital, including at grocery stores, malls, gas stations and other businesses. Approach ATMs with caution, particularly at night, since many thieves target them. Check the banks鈥 websites or the local yellow pages under 鈥淏ancos鈥 for a complete listing of branches.

Most international banks have their main offices in San Isidro: BBVA / Banco Continental (Av Rep煤blica de Panam谩 3055, San Isidro. Tel: 211-1000), Citibank (Av Canaval y Moreyra 480, 8th floor, San Isidro. Tel: 221-7000), HSBC (Amador Merino Reyna 207, 10th floor, San Isidro. Tel: 616-4722) and Scotiabank (Canaval y Moreyra 282, San Isidro. Tel: 311-6000). They also have branches in Central Lima, San Isidro, Miraflores (especially along Av Jos茅 Pardo), Barranco (on Avenida Grau, north of the Parque Municipal) and other parts of the city.

There are several reputable Peruvian banks, as well, with main offices in San Isidro and branches all over the city. Banco de la Naci贸n is where official fees are paid; it also exchanges money and is a Western Union agent (Av Rep煤blica de Panam谩 3664, San Isidro. Tel: 519-2000). BCP gives cash advances on Visa cards, and change Amex, Citicorp and Visa travelers checks (Ca Centenario 156, La Molina. Tel: 311-9898). Interbank allows foreigners to open accounts (Av Carlos Villar谩n 140, La Victoria. Tel: 219-2000).

Foreign exchange houses (casa de cambio) are also located throughout Lima. All change US dollars; most will also deal with Euros, and some with other currencies from Latin America and the world, as well as American Express travelers checks. Exchange rates may be lower on Fridays and weekends; the lowest are given at the airport. Shop around for the best rates. In Central Lima, many exchange houses are on Jr Oco帽a, near Plaza San Mart铆n; one is Universal (Jr Oco帽a 233). In Miraflores, several are on Av Larco: All Money Exchange (Av Larco 1118; also Ochar谩n 260), Casa de Cambio (Av Larco 657) and Global Exchange (Av Larco 655, of. 1).

Cambistas are street money changers, dressed in color-coded vests marked with 鈥$ / Euro鈥 written on the back and displaying official identification documents. They also may be found on every place in Lima, especially in tourist areas. Exercise extreme caution, however, when changing money on the street: don鈥檛 be distracted, count your money well, and check for counterfeit bills and coins.

American Express replaces lost or stolen travelers checks, but do not cash them; it also has travel services for card holders (Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Santa Cruz 621, Miraflores. Tel: 221-8204, E-mail: amexcard@travex.com.pe).

Several banks and agencies handle Moneygram transfers; check www.moneygram.com for a full list of providers. Per煤 Express, with several offices in Lima, is one of them; it can pay wires in US dollars (if sent in dollars). Per煤 Express鈥 main branch is in Miraflores (Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Av Larco 1154, Miraflores. Tel: 444-0314). Western Union also has many locations in Lima; consult www.westernunion.com for a list of agents.

Keeping in Touch

Serpost鈥檚 main office is a block from the Plaza de Armas (Monday-Saturday 8:15 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Jr Caman谩 157). To receive general delivery mail (estofeta), have the envelope addressed: NAME / Correo Central / Lima 1 Per煤. Serpost also has substations in all of Lima鈥檚 suburbs: San Isidro (Av Las Palmeras 205), Miraflores (Av Larco 868), Barranco (Av Grau 610, of 101); see URL: www.serpost.com.pe for other locations.

International couriers include: DHL (Av Javier Prado Este 307, San Isidro. Tel: 232-1976) and Fed Ex (Pje M谩rtir Olaya 260, Miraflores. Tel: 242-2280).

Internet caf茅s are literally a dime a dozen in Lima. Everything from bright, modern caf茅s to claustrophobic, hole-in-the wall joints exist. Be wary of plugging in your camera or USB, as many places don鈥檛 have good anti-virus programs. Travelers staying in Miraflores can stop into Drag贸n Internet (Ca Tarata 230, Tel: 446-6814) which is open every day. Parques Kennedy and Central are WiFi zones. In San Isidro, Belmundo en L铆nea has good computers with webcams and Skype, an offers scanning, copying and printing services (Av Petit Tours 3006 and Javier Prado, San Isidro).

Also on every block are telephone centers. Look for a sign that says cabinas or locutorio. Most have international service, as well as local and national. Cards for cellular phones are easy to find; even neighborhood shops sell them.

Medical

Lima has hundreds of clinics and hospitals, both public and private. Check with your embassy for suggested health care providers for emergencies; often it also includes specialists like cardiologists and dentists. Generally, the places listed will have someone on duty who speaks English. The US Embassy (lima.usembassy.gov/medical.html) lists: Cl铆nica San Borja (Av Guardia Civil 333, San Borja. Tel: 475-3141), Cl铆nica El Golf (Av Aureliano Miro Quesada 1030, San Isidro. Tel: 631-0000, URL: www.clinicagolf.com).

Dr. V铆ctor Aste speaks English and will be able to assist with most non-emergency needs (Antero Aspillaga 415, of 101, San Isidro. Tel: 441-7502).

Drug stores (farmacia or botica) are every place. Large national pharmacy chains, like InkaFarma (www.inkafarma.com.pe) and Boticas Arc谩ngel (www.boticasarcangel.com), have shops all over the city; consult their websites for the nearest locale. Arc谩ngel also has free delivery (Tel: 0-800-22121).

Laundry

Some hotels have in-house laundry services; few allow guests to wash clothing themselves. If you need to find a laundromat (lavander铆as) or dry cleaner (tintor铆as), ask your hostel鈥檚 staff for a recommendation in the neighborhood. Most launderers have same-day service. The number of laundromats is quite dizzying (there鈥檚 one every few blocks throughout the city); these are just a few: Lava Queen (Av Larco 1158, Miraflores. Tel: 445-5031), Servirap (Gral C贸rdova 973, San Isidro. Tel: 221-1698) and Lavander铆a Neptuno (Av Grau cda 4, Barranco).

Camera

Mundo Digital Flores repairs all types of cameras, sells original parts, and buys and sells used cameras (Av Abancay 620-A, interior 3, Central Lima. Tel: 782-8101, Cel: 992-887-204).
