Located 8 km (5 mi) north of Cajamarca, the small town of Otuzco is known for las ventanillas (little windows) carved into the mountainside. These beautiful stone windows were actually used by the Incas as tombs. The rock hillside looks like an ancient ghost town, abandonded since it was used as a burial ground between 300 and 800 A.D. The best way to visit Las Ventanillas is by a half-day organised tour from Cajamarca. Daily 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
