Chachapoyas is a relaxed town that serves as an excellent base from which to explore nearby little-known archaeological sites, as well as the fifth largest waterfall in the world, Yumbilla. Despite its relatively small size, Chachapoyas is the capital of the Amazonas Region. It was founded in 1538 by Spanish captain Alonso de Alvarado, and much of its colonial heritage still remains. The Chachapoyas area was shaken by a 6.4 earthquake on May 18, 2010, damaging several buildings, especially around the main plaza.
