

Chacapoyas has a wonderful array of typical regional foods: try Juanes (rice, spices and chicken or fish wrapped in the leaves of the bijao plant); cecina (dried, seasoned meat); and fruit liqueurs made from local fruits and plants such as sauco (elderberry) and chuchuhuasi (a medicinal tree bark). There are also a number of restaurants serving up international cuisine. The market (Grau and Libertad) is a great place to pick up fresh produce and inexpensive meals. On the first floor, you can find tamales (steamed corn cakes wrapped in banana leaves, served with either cheese or meat), juanes, and other goodies in the morning. Juice and ceviche stands are up on the second floor.
