The pre-Inca, ancient lost city of Kuélap is an astonishing rival to that rather more famous lost city, Machu Picchu. Only a tiny percentage of Peru's tourists visit Kuélap, however, and it remains an unspoiled secret that only the most adventurous and independent travelers will discover. Unlike Machu Picchu, the area is not geared for tourism, though if you want to make your experience a little easier, you can buy a tour to Kuélap with an agency in Chachapoyas. There are cheap hostels and restaurants in the surrounding hamlets. The nearby village of Tingo is the starting point for any visit to Kuélap.
