In recent years, Chiclayo has been recognized as an important area for Peruvian archeological sites. There are three major sites in the surrounding area, each with its own museum.
The Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum, located about 10 minutes from Chiclayo, offers an impressive collection of artifacts from the Mohican Culture. The Brüning Archaeological Museum, named after the German architect that begun excavating the museum's contents, has over 1,500 artifacts on display. The Sicán National Museum, which is around 40 kilometers (25 mi) away from Chiclayo, has various displays that showcase Sicán way of life and culture.
Within the town of Chiclayo there is less to do, but it is still worth spending a day or two wandering around it. There is an interesting flea market in town, and if it a nice day, packing a picnic and heading to Paseo de las Musas is a lovely way to pass an afternoon.
