By Lorraine Caputo

It isn’t just all surf and sun in Huanchaco. There is a rising tide of fine art and other cultural spaces in this fishing village. Galería de Arte Club Colonial has regular exhibits featuring national artists. The opening night receptions are bound to be tasteful affairs, as Club Colonial is also one of Huanchaco’s oldest up-scale restaurants (daily 1-11 p.m. Avenida La Ribera 514, Tel.: 46-1015, 47-1639).

Drop by Chiclayano Joan Louis’ studio to view his works and chat about his contemporary paintings, based on classical Peruvian symbology (irregular hours. Ricardo Palma 240, Tel.: 949-33-5076, E-mail: arte@joanlouis.com, URL: www.joanlouis.com).

Huanchaco’s Area Cultural has a permanent exhibit of photographs and artesanía, hosts cultural events and presentations, and shows a free video every Friday at 6:30 p.m. (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Libertad 204). The public library is next door.
