Fernando Paraud picked up the moniker, “Wawa,” a quechuan-based word for “little child” by always being the smallest in his class, and the name stuck even as he became a tall, hunky, world-renowed surfer, competing from Sydney to Santa Cruz. His reputation in his native Peru is such that when he purchased the Casa del Mar people kept referring to as the “wawa’s hotel,” so he finally gave in and it became “Hotel Del Wawa,” though he still refuses to have the name on a sign. No matter: everyone will tell you where it is. This first-rate beachfront hotel, complete with air-conditioning, features a restaurant as well as a surfing school whose profits go to help local children.

Getting There:
Just before Puente Cabo Blanco on the south edge of Máncora, follow the concrete road on the right heading towards the beach. At the end of the road, turn right. It is the low, salmon-colored building, third on the left.
