There are a plethora of activities available on Peru's northern coast, perhaps more so than in any other region. This area is especially rich in archaeological sites. Some of the most noteworthy are the Tombs of Sipán, which were discovered in 1987 and showcases a large collection of extravagant artifacts. Another noteworthy attraction is Chan Chan, which is the ruins of the largest pre-Columbian city in South America.
Visitors to the major cities in this area, including Trujillo, Chiclayo and Piura, can find a variety of museums and city sites to keep them entertained. The towns all also have various markets, which are worth a visit to experience the local culture and find some goodies to take home.
If you are more into a beach scene, Máncora is the perfect place for you. This Peruvian beach town has prime surfing. However, since it had become rather touristy in recent years, many are choosing to escape to the
beautiful beaches of Cabo Blanco, Los Organos and Las Pocitas instead.
