The Iglesia del Carmen is still used for masses, but its role has grown with the years. Now this venerable 18th century church is also a religious art museum, showcasing its Baroque altar screen and pieces of from the Quiteña and Cusqueña Schools of art. Adjoining the nave are two more galleries exhibiting fine silver and gold filigree models of churches, inlaid wooden crosses and other crafts by regional artisans, as well as religious items from Piura’s other churches. Pope Juan Pablo II’s chair from his visit is also displayed. Included in the admission is the Sala Bolívar Periodista, a journalism museum showing the history and technology behind Peru’s oldest newspaper, El Peruano.
