Piura is nicknamed “La Ciudad de Eterno Calor” (the city of eternal heat). All year this desert-oasis city is hot during the day and cool at night. January through March is summertime, with temperatures reaching 29-33ºC (84-92ºF) with rain. The rest of the year is a bit cooler with garúa (fine mist). The city observes its founding October 1-9, with Peruvian paso horse shows, music serenades and a folk dance festival. Tourism week is celebrated the last week of August with special tours and cultural exhibits. Piura honors the Virgen de Perpetuo Socorro (June 27-July 5) and the Virgen de las Mercedes (September 22-30).
