Budget is the most appropriate adjective for the Hotel Americano, which proves to be an adventuresome stay for travelers more concerned about pinching pennies than bedding down in a squeaky clean room. It's an ancient mansion that's been diced into what seems like hundreds of fairly-sized rooms with creaking wooden floors and graffitied walls.
Wander through the dark halls late at night and you may feel like the unsuspecting victim in a horror flick, especially under the watchful eyes of portraits on the walls. Rooms with a window (or if you're lucky, a balcony) opening over Pizarro can be especially noisy with the incessant hustle and bustle of traffic below, but the bird's eye view makes for interesting people watching on one of the city center's most popular streets.
Light sleepers, however, will not only want to avoid street side rooms, but may want to consider a pair of earplugs. The Hotel Americano is popular with young Peruvians and the indoor balconies overlooking the lobby, as well as the halls, often host late night conversations that are easily overheard in nearby rooms. With rock hard pillows, sagging mattresses and much to be desired in the bathrooms' cleanliness, what the Hotel Americano lacks in luxury it offers in character. The smiling staff doesn't speak a word of English, but everyone is unfailingly patient and polite. Rooms are available with or without private baths, and hot showers cost extra.
