Trujillo offers a variety of culinary options to visitors, and is a great place to sample a bit of everything. To test your palate with some of the local food, head towards the restaurants around Plazuela El Recreo, where you'll find less expensive traditional dishes like cabrito de leche (goat cooked in milk), arroz con pato (rice with duck), or shambar (wheat soup with beans and pork). If you've got money to burn and are looking for something with a bit more class, then take your pick of international cafés lining the seventh block of Pizarro. Although the nearby town of Huanchaco is better known for its seafood, Trujillo also has a few cheap seafood restaurants, which are located near Plazuela El Recreo.

The menú, or daily special, is served mostly at lunch. The price ranges from $1.35 to $5, with cheaper eateries being found on Orbegoso and along Ayacucho, as well as near the bus terminals. The mercado is at Ayacucho and Gamarra.
