Tumbes features some great places to eat, and is especially noteworthy for its concha negras, a particular black clam indigenous to the coast of northern Peru. Tumbes culinary specialties are based on fish and seafood. Yes, land-lubbing animals make it on the menus here, but don't miss out on dishes like black conch cebiche, ají de langostinos (spicy prawns), chupe de cangrejo (crab chowder) and caldo de bolas (a soup of green plantain dumplings with olives and raisins). The daily special, most often served at lunch, costs $1.35-3. Tumbes' market is on the third block of Avenida Mariscal Castillo.
