Mountain biking is relatively new to Peru but due to nearly unlimited numbers of trails and routes it is quickly gaining ground. The two major mountain biking centers are Huarez in the Cordillera Blanca Range and Cusco around the Sacred Valley, neither of which have a shortage of tour operators. Trips from one day to two weeks are available and most multi-day excursions include a support vehicle to transport your food, clothing etc. Rentals are available in both locations but if you are planning a trip to Peru solely for biking it's best to bring your own. As with any rental, you get what you pay for. Cheaper bikes will cost about $15/day, but to get a decent bike with front suspension will cost closer to $25/day. All rentals should come with a helmet, puncture repair kit, pump and a first-aid kit. Below are the brief descriptions of the main riding destinations.
Huaraz and the Cordillera Blanca
Huaraz is the primary location for mountain bikers in Peru. Experienced riders, especially those looking for a more physically challenging experience, tend to gravitate towards Huaraz.
The most popular trip is the Huascarán Tour. Offered by most major tour companies this trip is anywhere from 5 to 14 days and includes extensive touring of the Cordillera Blanca Range and of Huascarán National Park. The vistas in the Cordillera Blanca are stunning and many consider it the most beautiful range in the world.
Huaraz has some of the more challenging riding in Peru, but most companies offer a range of options depending on ability and fitness level.
Given that many of the rides are in the Cordillera Blanca there is loads of technical singletrack to be ridden. If you're looking to burn your quads you can ride to the top before barreling down but if you're only looking for the exhilaration of the downhill ride many companies will drive you and your bike to the top.
Cusco and the Sacred Valley
Cusco is the best choice for mountain biking tours for less-experienced riders, or those looking for an easier ride. Mountain biking tours from Cusco range from one day to over a week. There are numerous options for those looking to get out and spend a day on a bike to see the beautiful Sacred Valley. Most of the day trips are straight-forward, downhill cruises taking riders past Inca ruins and through the striking surroundings of the Sacred Valley.
Arequipa
Many of the trekking and rafting companies based in Arequipa also offer mountain biking. The Colca Canyon is the deepest in the world and is a popular destination for riders of all abilities. Another option is a downhill or cross-country ride on the sides of the snow-capped Misti Volcano. Most companies drive you to the highest point of the trip and from there you get on your bike and begin to cruise downhill.
