Get There And Away - Cusco

Cusco, bus, flights

By Air:

Flights will get you to and from Lima. The price starts from $ 100 and the flight takes one hour. Flights to La Paz also start from $ 100 and take an hour.

Book in advance, as prices tend to rise and planes fill up. Cusco’s unreliable weather can cause flights to be canceled.

There are mini buses (signed Imperial) that leave from the outside of the airport. They go between the airport and Choque Chaca, located in between Plaza de Armas and San Blas. The mini buses can be crowded, so if you have a lot of luggage it might be better to take a taxi. The bus journey cost 0.6 Soles. A taxi between the airport and a hostel/hotel in the Plaza de Armas or San Blas area should not cost more than 5 soles.

By Bus:

Cusco is a hub for travelers and provides good transportation. There are many bus companies that will take you to and from Cusco. Some of the bigger bus companies operating to and from Cusco are:

An economy alternative and one or two luxury versions are usually available. The same minibus (Imperial) that goes to the airport also goes by the bus station (as well as the market el Molino). The price is also the same, 0.6 soles. A taxi from the bus station to Plaza de Armas or San Blas costs 4 soles.

Buses will take you to Lima for 100-180 soles. The journey takes 20 hours and leaves from Cusco or Lima in the afternoon. The bus that takes you to Lima will also go to Nazca (12 hours) and Ica (15 hours). The downside is that prices are usually the same as the whole trip to Lima. Some of the companies operating Cusco - Lima are Cruz del Sur, Expreso Cial, Tepsa and Turismo Civa.

A trip to Abancay takes 5 hours and prices are around 15 soles (Turismo Civa).

Buses to Puno (Lake Titicaca) cost 30-45 soles and take six to seven hours (Tour Peru and Cruz del Sur). A bus to Arequipa takes eight hours and costs 35-70 soles (Turismo Civa and Expreso Cial). To Puerto Maldonado, the bus takes 16 hours and starts at 4 p.m., cost is 50 soles (Turismo Civa).

If you want to travel to Bolivia, there is a bus to Copacabana that starts around 10 p.m., takes 12 hours and prices start at 60 soles (Tour Peru). To La Paz, the journey takes 13 hours and also starts around 10 p.m., prices are 80-90 soles (Tour Peru and Cruz del Sur).

By Train:

The reason to take a train is because of the view and the experience from the journey. It’s a great way to experience the beautiful and overwhelming landscape around Cusco in comfort.

Trains leave from Poroy (20 min with taxi from Cusco) to Puno, departing at 8 a.m. and arriving in Puno at 6 p.m.; the cost is $220, lunch is included. The train from Puno to Cusco also starts at 8 a.m. and prices are the same. The service running from November - March has trains that leave Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and those running April - October, leave on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

A train from Poroy to Machu Picchu takes about three hours and costs $48, $71 or $334 depending on the train. Note that different prices are for different trains, not different compartments in the same train. Don’t forget to buy an entrance ticket to Machu Picchu at Instituto Nacional de Cultura for 124 soles.

Tickets can be booked at the train station or at, a site in both English and Spanish. There are sometimes last minute offerings on the website, so it is worth a visit.
