The ancient and modern people of the Andes are often incorrectly referred to as the "Inca." In fact, only the kings and ruling family were referred to as Inca. The closest translation for the word 'Inca' is 'king,' at least in the way the people of the ancient Andes used it. They called their empire "Tawantinsuyu."
