V!VA User‘s Description
The ratio of cons to pros in assessing whether it is worth it to rent a car is at least a dozen to one: bad roads, high rental costs (including hidden costs), poor quality vehicles, antagonistic drivers, high theft and vandalism risks, frequent and costly tolls, unreadable road signs, time-consuming drives between cities—and few gas stations along the way. By contrast, it is considerably cheaper and easier to get around via bus, taxi, plane, or train. Still, some feel that it provides them a unique autonomy, so if you are going to rent a car, Hertz, Budget, and Avis have franchises in Peru. A familiarity with driving standard transmission is recommended.
