Taxis in Peru

Unlike Ecuador and other countries, taxis in Peru do not have meters to provide an objective price.  With poverty and low-wages being what they are in this country, even the most congenial taxi driver will not be above trying to pull a fast on an inexperienced tourist, though the majority will be honest. Your best bet is to inquire, before you hail a cab, what the estimated price from point A to point B will be, and to let your driver know that.  Peru's tourist police are very strict about curtailing unlicensed cabs, and they can tell what sort of identifying sticker for legal cabs you should look out for.

It is not uncommon for travelers, particularly in groups, to use a cab to get from one town to another, since the fare, when divided, is often not more expensive than a minibus, and the ride considerably more comfortable.
