Studying Spanish in Peru

Peru is home to a number of excellent Spanish schools, most of which are centered in cities with thriving tourist scenes such as Lima and Cusco. Arequipa, Huancayo, and Hauraz are also growing in popularity as study destinations, and you will also find smaller schools in rural, jungle and coastal areas. Combined with all that the country has to offer (culture, history, mountains, beach, jungle), Peru is an ideal place to hunker down and habla espa├▒ol.

Especially in the bigger tourist destinations, Spanish schools offer a variety of programs. You'll find private courses and small group classes; courses that combine Spanish with other elements (Peruvian culture, salsa, medical or business Spanish, to name a few); courses that are intensive-30 hours a week or more-and courses that are a little more relaxed. Some schools offer semester-long programs and university credit, and a number also offer the DELE (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language).

Most schools offer an extracurricular program, allowing students to socialize and get to know each other. Activities include day and weekend trips, salsa classes, movie nights, cultural discussions and cooking classes (some schools provide these activities for free, others require an additional fee). Several schools can also link students up to volunteering placements-again, some schools offer this for free, others do not. If you want to study Spanish and help the local community at the same time, there are a number of schools that are run by NGOs, with proceeds going to local charities.

There are generally a variety of accommodation options, with students given the choice of living with a local host family, sharing a house with other students, or renting a private apartment.

Prices vary, so do your research. Many schools have websites and allow you to book your classes and accommodation before you arrive in Peru, though these schools tend to be more expensive; it can be cheaper to wait until you arrive at your destination and then take a look at a few different schools, though in high season (May to September), you may find schools are booked up.
