El Abuelo Restaurant, located in one corner of the Carhuaz Plaza de Armas, is easily the only first-rate restaurant in Carhuaz, and the only one to take Visa and debit cards (though not MasterCard). It offers expertly made steak, chicken, and trout plates, as well as vegetarian and non-vegetarian crepes, and of course, an extensive ice-cream selection. There is also a mini folk-art shop and an interpretive display of local plants that are used as natural dyes. The owner, Felipe Diaz, is also a professional cartographer and offers maps of the area for sale.
