Due to the area’s status as a premier destination for outdoor activities, lodging in the Central Peruvian Andes caters to the backpacker market. However, there are still options available in the mid-range and high-end.
In Huaraz, there are many great hostels and it's not rare for locals to offer rooms in their home to travelers. Be careful with this option as there is no way to know exactly what you are getting until you’ve committed. There are some beautiful mid-range B&Bs, hostels and hotels. Further into the mountains, you’ll find charming lodges and inns as well.
Multiple tours and treks in the surrounding Cordilleras include accommodations (camping, etc.) at base camp. Monterrey offers lodging within a short walk of each other and the hot springs. Charming and a tad more expensive than the average hostel, these are decent places to stay. In Carhuaz, Yungay and Caraz are basic hostels with clean rooms and hot water as well as nicer options for the pickier traveler.
