Huaraz Hiking Acclimatization

Hiking, Trekking, Climbing

V!VA User‘s Description

Before strapping on the high altitude gear, even the most experienced adventurers should follow a few common sense steps to ensure a safe journey. The first of these steps is to acclimatize gradually. Even the first camps along many of the treks are high enough to trigger altitude sickness, so it's recommended that you spend your first couple days in Huaraz taking it easy and exploring some of the lower-altitude sites in the area. An easy walk up to the Mirador Rataquena above Huaraz is a great way to spend the afternoon. Or you can catch a combi heading east from Huaraz to the Callán Pass (4, 225 meters). A network of trails and dirt roads head from here back to Huaraz, and are perfect for a less strenuous day of exploration. On the second day, make your way to Laguna Churup (4, 485 meters) or to nearby Quebrada Quilcayhuanca. For further information on how to spend your first few days acclimatizing, head to either Café Andino or Casa de Guías, both excellent sources of climbing and trekking information.
