If you’re keen for some solo time, or want to organize a trip for just you and your cronies, you can plan your own trek. However, there are a few important things you should remember before you strap on the high altitude gear.
Due to the extreme altitude (treks through the Cordilleras Blanca, Negra and Huayhuash region involve a series of calf-burning, 4,000- to 5,000-meter peaks) even experienced mountaineers may have difficulty carrying a pack. Many trekkers choose to hire donkeys and arrieros (muleteers). In addition to keeping your horse in line these guys make your trip safer and are a great way to get to know the local culture. You can also feel warm and fuzzy about contributing to the local economy.
Most arrieros can be hired on the spot, so you can head to an area and then hire one; however, you should make sure the deal is clear from the beginning. For a list of recommended cooks and handlers, head to the Casa de Guías. Be a responsible traveler and pay the people you hire fairly. Also be aware that it is your duty to provide your arrieros, porters or cooks with food and a tent during the trip.
