In addition to hikers' concerns in and around Huaraz, the city itself poses a few dangers. Even if you’re not going hiking (for which you should allow two days to acclimatize), you’ll still feel the effects of Huaraz’s high altitude. Be sure to drink lots of water and avoid caffeine, alcohol and excessive exertion, as not to become dehydrated. Coca tea tends be a great help and is generally served everywhere. In 2002 and 2003 a few armed robberies of tourists trekking outside of Huaraz were reported. You may want to check with tourist information for the best advice on traveling outside of the city center.
