A good five or six kilometers (about three miles) north of Huaraz, in Monterrey, the locals say that the thermal baths will help ease ailments in bones, joints and muscles. With piping hot waters reaching 49 degrees Celsius (120º F), it's best to visit these natural baths May through September. There are public as well as private pools. A 22-cent bus from Huaraz stops in front of the pools. A taxi costs about $2-3. Best to avoid weekends as the pools tend to be crowded. The brown discoloration of the water is natural so don't worry, the pools aren't dirty.
