Historical Building
V!VA User‘s Description
Just eight kilometers northeast of Huaraz is the Wilkawaín archaeological site. The ruins date to the Wari Empire, which dominated the region from 700 to 1000 AD. Gravity-defying vertical stone slabs and several smaller structures lead into finely constructed sepulchral stone chambers. The temple is done in Tiahuanaco style and means “grandson’s house” in Quechua. Mummified bodies of prominent leaders were once laid to rest in the chambers of these three-story structures and kept dry using a complicated ventilation system.
Compared to other ruins in Peru, the Wilkawaín ruins require very little imagination as they are remarkably well preserved. For an additional fee you can enjoy a tour of the ruins, organized by charming (and very articulate) eight-year-olds.
To get there, take a combi from Huaraz (13 de Diciembre and Comercio) for about 30 cents direct to Wilkawaín; a taxi will cost a few dollars. On foot, walk past Hotel Huascarán, and cross the small bridge over the Río Quilcay, about a half-hour journey. Take the second right, which is marked by a blue sign, and continue uphill for about two hours. You may have to ask for directions as it’s easy to lose your way along the myriad of trails used regularly by locals. About 500 meters beyond Wilkawain is Ichiwilkawaín, which contains several other smaller structures. Take a torch if it’s late. There is also an alternative road from the ruins to Monterrey, where you can relax with a hot soak in the thermal baths.
Note: There have been armed robberies on this small trail.
