Wilkawaín

Historical Building

V!VA User‘s Description

Just 8 kilometers northeast of Huarez is the Wilkawaín archaeological site. The ruins date back to the Huari Empire, which dominated the region from 700 to 1000 AD. Gravity-defying vertical stone slabs and several smaller structures lead into finely constructed sepulchral stone chambers. The mummified bodies of prominent leaders were once laid to rest in the chambers of these three-story structures.  Compared to other ruins in Peru, the Wilkawain ruins require very little imagination as they are remarkably well preserved. For an additional fee you can enjoy a tour of the ruins, organized by charming (and very articulate) eight-year-olds.

Getting There-Take a combi from 13 de Diciembre and Comercio ($.60) direct to Wilkawain. On foot, walk past Hotel Huascarán, and cross the small bridge over the Río Quilcay, about a half hour journey. Take the second right, which is marked by a blue sign, and continue uphill about 2 hours. You may have to ask for directions as it's easy to lose your way along the myriad of trails used regularly by locals. About 500 meters beyond Wilkawain is Ichiwilkawain, which contains several other smaller structures. Take a torch if it's late. There is also an alternative road from the ruins to Monterrey, where you can relax with a hot soak in the thermal baths.
